On 4/2/2025, Queens College had the honor of hosting the Borough of Queens: CUNY Undergraduate Symposium in the Student Union Ballroom. York College, Queensborough Comm. College, La Guardia and CUNY Office of Research congregated for a day of learning & engagement. Dr. Joangela Nouel, and Dr. Alma Rodenas-Ruano were the keynote speakers.

Henry Alonso from the Urban Studies department presented his poster on Questioning 421-a: Making “Below Moderate” Progress in Assisting Economically Distressed Renters.
He found that the Below Moderate AMI (Area Median Income) geography housed a larger percentage of the city’s moderately rent-burdened households than its total renter population between 2014- 2019.

Queens College’s own Sofia Mitts (BA Dec ’24) & Hannah Mangoianu (BA May ’25) from the Sociology department presented their poster on Greek Life Membership & Academic Performance.
They found that the GPA pattern of those in Greek life is similar to those who are not in Greek life. Furthermore, they found that many of the respondents stated Greek life & club affiliation had little to no impact on their academic performance.


Michael Morello from the Sociology department presented his poster on When it comes to Crime by Neighborhood, do Socioeconomic factors tell the Whole Story?
Disadvantaged Neighborhoods & Gun Violence in NYC: A Post-Regression Analysis of Environmental & Social Contributors.
He found that neighborhoods with higher disadvantage scores are more likely to experience gun violence. Furthermore, gun violence is more likely in neighborhoods with combined environment & social burdens.
